Youth Sailing Program

The Bay View Boat Club and Mariposa Hunters Point Yacht Club program is run by dedicated volunteer members of the Bay View Boat Club and Mariposa Hunters Point Yacht Club of San Francisco, CA. The lessons take place inside cove between Pier 50 and Pier 54 where the water is protected and calm. This area of the port is roughly 15 acres in size, and is well protected from the conditions of the San Francisco bay.

Close monitoring, instruction and guidance are provided on the water by a Sailing Instructor riding on safety boats. The kids are constantly close at hand, and are encouraged to not sail if they feel uneasy about it. The motto is “if in doubt, don’t go out”. This saying is stressed over and over again during the preliminary, on-shore “chalk talks” where we discuss safety and seamanship.

The classes emphasize safety conscious FUN sailing, considering weather, tides, traffic, etc. at all times. Besides learning general seamanship, like knots and equipment care, students learn boat nomenclature, rigging, boat handling, proper upwind sailing, tacking, downwind sailing, jibing, boat handling, teamwork and sportsmanship.

Course Requirements:

Age range 8 to 15
Students will be required to perform the “Swim Test” by swimming 75 yards plus life jacket practice.
Must have their own Coast Guard approved life vest, Personal Floatation Device, rated for their weight
Some assistance from parents would be appreciated during the lessons.

Space is limited. The fee for the 5 session is $100.00. This includes the use of a Bay View Boat Club and Mariposa Hunters Point Yacht Club sailboat. Please contact either club at bvbc.mhpyc.youth.sailing@gmail.com.

Youth Sailing Instructors

BVBC-MHPYC Junior Instructor Program

The Bay View Boat Club-Mariposa Hunter’s Point Yacht Club (BVBC-MHPYC)'s Junior Instructor Program is designed for youth sailors who are looking to build their leadership skills while also continuing to develop their sailing knowledge and skills. This program is not intended for novice sailors. It is a program designed for young sailors who are highly motivated and ready to work hard and play hard, and who demonstrate additional responsibility in accepting the challenges of leadership.
Students in our Junior Instructor Program will not only develop their leadership, they will grow their communication, and teamwork skills as they take on responsibility as Junior Instructors at BVBC-MHPYC Youth Sailing Program, as well as learn about:

work ethic
motivation
purpose
responsibility
collaboration
self-awareness
collegiality

Junior Instructors Qualification:

Youth Boaters will be selected by and invited into this program by B.E.P.

Junior Instructors are confident and proficient dinghy skippers. Also, they will be getting training with how to operate our program’s support power boats.

Our expectations for our Junior Instructors during class time will be that during each session, they’ll be assigned to a youth sailing group or certain students who they’ll be “buddied” with; they will assist BVBC-MHPYC volunteer/instructors team and act as a leader for students on and off the water.

Each Junior Instructor may be paid a stipend and is treated with the same respect that we treat our volunteer staff members. We see them as our future leaders. And we invest in them so that they will be leaders that support the growth and positive culture of the BVBC-MHPYC Youth Sailing Program. Youth Instructors will receive advanced training in all areas of our program.

A successful Youth Instructor will have demonstrated competence in the following areas:

-Been in attendance for at least 6 class sessions and instructed on-the-water.

-Participate in the class room sessions with short presentations

-Follow through on assignments and instructions given by Senior Staff

-Share outside on-the-water experiences

-Sailing competence on various boats

-Safety boat operation expertise

-Adopt one program boat to keep clean, well rigged and in good repair

-Develop one personal area of expertise to teach others the skill, such as:

Outboard motor operation, all motors
Boat rigging, all boats
On-the-water safety,
VHF radio operation
Rescue expertise
Rules of the road,
Boat maintenance,
Sail care and maintenance
Knots and lines,
Docking-undocking
Wind knowledge,
Current knowledge,
First aid
Safety boat operation

Senior Staff will provide specific training in each of these areas.
